Apparently some scholars thought about it, too, so I feel this theory could be at least seriously considered. I thought there is a certain similarity between this novel’s being consciously marketed by its author and/or publisher in such a way that people would consider it factual, and the way Barrett hides behind her “Portuguese translator” persona. Before I read that the choice of Portuguese was inspired by Barrett’s Camoes poem, I thought it could be because of an early French epistolary novel Les Lettres Portugaises (1669), the text which nowadays most critics believe to be a work of fiction, but for centuries was considered to be a collection of letters by a real Portuguese nun, abandoned by her lover. By giving her poems this title, suggesting that they are a translation rather than the original work, Barrett Browning tried to deflect the possible speculation about them being inspired by her own life. The title is apparently inspired by Robert’s praise of her poem “Catarina to Camoens”, which is a farewell sent to the great Portuguese poet Camoes, ostensibly written by his muse Catherina de Athaide on her deathbed.
Sonnets from the Portuguese were written by Elizabeth Barrett during Robert’s secret courtship of her, but she didn’t show them to him until well into their marriage, and then let herself be persuaded into publishing them. Got overwhelmed by work for the last few days, but hope to be back to the regular posting scheduled.
